Young Women in Tourism Awards

Purpose

The Young Women in Tourism Awards is one of the first legacy projects announced for Scotland’s Year of Young People. Those aged 30 and under on January 1st 2019 will be eligible to apply for the awards with each award winner receiving a package of support from WIT, as well as an opportunity to take part in bespoke placements with industry leaders. The awards are the next step in continuing to support our emerging leaders and aim to recognise young women who are working or studying within the tourism sector in Scotland.

Eligibility

For categories 1 – 3, the nominated female must be 30 years or younger on 1 Jan 2019, and must be working or studying in Scotland, in fields relevant to the tourism sector. For category 4, the nominated female must be 18 years or older on 1 Jan 2019, and must be studying in Scotland, in fields relevant to the tourism sector. Applicants must have a keen interest in contributing to the tourism sector as a whole, and their commitment must be demonstrated within the application process.

Application Process

Entries must include a completed entry form or video file with the details requested, and information to explain why you should win.  Please consider the judging criteria given to help you provide suitable information.  Please assume that the judges know nothing about you, your role or your company.  You can send supporting information in addition to the entry form. Please note, large video files are unlikely to get through, so please either send your video application using a Dropbox or Wetransfer link, or  similar platform.

Judging Process

A shortlist for each category will be judged by the Women in Tourism board members, and a representative from the category sponsor.

Dates For Your Diary

  • Go live date: week commencing 15 April
  • Applications must be submitted by: 8 May
  • Shortlist will be announced on: 31 May
  • Awards will be presented on: 13 June

Award Categories

1. Rising Star of the Year

Purpose

This award aims to celebrate the young women working in the tourism industry. It also offering the opportunity to recognise those who are making a positive impact on the tourism sector, and to encourage them to strive to achieve positions of leadership within the industry. We are looking for passionate individuals who are already achieving great things!

Judging Criteria

Tell us in a video, no longer than one minute, why you, or your nominee is worthy of this award. If you are unable to submit a video, please submit your application in writing, no longer than 1000 words.

Please answer the following questions in your submission:

  • What have you / your nominee achieved to be worthy of this award?
  • Tell us about one thing that you/your nominee has achieved in the last 12 months that you/he or she should be particularly proud of
  • Consider your passion for tourism and what drives you to achieve results in your current role
  • What you see as the key drivers/changes in tourism going forward, especially for your generation?

2. Tourism Influencer of the Year

Purpose

In an ever-evolving social media age, there is no denying the power and positive impact influencers are having on the tourism sector. This award aims to celebrate the very best influencers, those who are at the top of their game, and demonstrate a clear passion for tourism in Scotland. We are looking for influencers who are doing something different, building a loyal following, and helping to promote an area of the tourism sector.

Tell us in a video, no longer than one minute, why you are worthy of this award.

Please answer the following questions in your submission:

  • Tell us about what drives you and why you are passionate about the tourism industry
  • A successful campaign you have worked on
  • A piece of content you have produced in the past twelve months that you are most proud of
  • What you see as the key drivers/changes in tourism going forward, especially for your generation?

You may also submit one supporting document which can outline details of your platform, engagement and follower count and any campaign examples.

3. Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year

Purpose

This award aims to recognise successful entrepreneurs who are making a positive impact in the tourism sector, and celebrate the legacies they’re building. It also aims to supporting emerging female entrepreneurial talent in the tourism industry.

Judging Criteria

Tell us in a video, no longer than one minute, why you, or your nominee is worthy of this award. If you are unable to submit a video, please submit your application in writing, no longer than 1000 words.

Please answer the following questions in your submission:

  • Give a brief the history of your business: please include information on why and how was it established, who was involved in its establishment?
  • In what aspects have you, the business owner/s, excelled in business to make worthy of being the Entrepreneur of the Year winner/s?
  • As a business owner, briefly describe how you have proven your entrepreneurial ability
  • What you see as the key drivers/changes in tourism going forward, especially for your generation?

You may also submit one supporting document to detail any relevant business strategy details and financial growth results.

4. Tourism Student of the Year

Purpose

Students are the beating heart of our sector’s future. This award aims to recognise and celebrate those students who are bringing fresh and exciting ideas to the forefront, and who are demonstrating a passion to progress in the tourism sector.

Judging Criteria

Tell us in a video, no longer than one minute, why you are worthy of this award.

Please answer the following questions in your submission:

  • Tell us about what drives you and why you choose to study within the tourism sector
  • A piece of work from the past 12 months you are particularly proud of
  • Where you see yourself in the five years’ time
  • What you see as the key drivers/changes in tourism going forward, especially for your generation?

You may also submit one supporting document which can outline any relevant course work or tutor testimonial.
